Despite the ongoing global crises, the AutoID/AIDC markets are experiencing a positive business and market development, according to a survey conducted by the industry association AIM-D. AIM companies provide products, solutions, and services for automatic identification (AutoID/AIDC) and mobile systems in various technology fields such as barcodes, RFID, NFC, RTLS, and industrial sensors.

AutoID/AIDC Markets Remain Positive Despite Global Challenges

Despite the ongoing global crises, the AutoID/AIDC markets have shown positive business and market development in the second half of 2023, according to a survey conducted by the industry association AIM-D. The industry remains cautiously optimistic and well-prepared to tackle the challenges of advancing digitization, increasing automation, autonomous processes, robotics, and AI. Current issues such as the Ukraine conflict, the situation in the Middle East, energy prices, and the shortage of skilled workers have not negatively impacted the industry’s outlook.

The members of AIM-D e.V., according to Peter Altes, are pleased with the improved or stable business development of the AutoID markets. Despite the current situation, the companies are not discouraged and see opportunities even in crises. The expectation for stabilization or improvement in the next six months is over 65%.

Despite the ongoing global crises, the economic situation for AutoID companies remained stable in the second half of 2023 compared to the previous six months. Around 30% of companies increased their investments, while approximately 50% maintained stable investment behavior. Only a small percentage (less than 20%) showed more cautious investment tendencies.

The AIDC community continues to excel in automating processes and digitizing value creation, making it a crucial aspect of their core competencies. AutoID technologies act as invisible enablers for automation and autonomous process management across various industries’ production and logistics. Despite the delicate global political situation, there is a glimmer of hope for the AutoID industry and its markets.

The development of AutoID technologies is heavily influenced by global political conditions, economic factors, market acceptance, and global standardization. While there are ongoing developments, the industry is also facing significant challenges such as the implementation of the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and ensuring security in line with the EU Cyber Resilience Act. These factors play a crucial role in shaping the future of AutoID technologies.

The overall market development in the field of AutoID indicates that over 65% of the surveyed companies anticipate either a better or stable development. These companies assess their own development more positively than the general market trend.

According to a recent survey, 10% of companies in the AutoID/AIDC industry have reported a better market development specifically for barcode and other optical identification systems. This indicates a positive trend and potential growth in demand for these technologies. On the other hand, 40% of the companies have observed a stable market development, suggesting a consistent demand for these identification systems. This data highlights the importance and relevance of barcode and optical identification technologies in various industries.

The development of RFID, NFC, and RTLS technologies is considered stable and is closely linked to the advancements in Industry 4.0, logistics digitization, and the Internet of Things (IoT/IIoT). About 30% of companies anticipate further improvements in these technologies, while over 40% expect their development to remain stable.

In order to streamline the process and focus on key trends, AIM members will now be surveyed once a year regarding their expectations for increased demand in the future. The results of this survey will be presented and published in the Trend Barometer for the first half of 2024 during the summer. This will provide a comprehensive overview of market expectations and help inform strategic decision-making.

Overall, the survey results conducted by the Industrial Association AIM-D indicate a positive business and market development for the AutoID-. AIDC markets, despite the global crises. The industry is well-positioned and actively addressing the challenges posed by advancing digitalization, automation, and autonomous processes. The findings highlight the resilience and adaptability of the sector in navigating through turbulent times and embracing new technological advancements.
