Market Express is set to revolutionise the UK events industry with its launch at ExCeL in London on 22 May 2023. As the first cashierless shop in an events space, it will offer visitors a unique shopping experience without queues or tills.

Innovative partnership: ExCeL and Levy UK + Ireland use Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology for frictionless shopping

Aiming to further enhance the visitor experience in food and beverage, ExCeL and its longstanding catering partner, Levy UK + Ireland, are opening a shop powered by Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology. The use of this advanced cashierless technology will speed up the customer process by allowing customers to purchase their items without queuing at the till. This allows for a convenient and stress-free shopping experience for visitors.

A completely new form of shopping awaits visitors to ExCeL’s Market Express, thanks to Amazon’s groundbreaking Just Walk Out technology. After customers register their payment card or mobile wallet as they enter the shop, a virtual shopping session begins, with artificial intelligence recognising exactly which products customers take from the shelves or put back. As soon as the shopping is completed, the customers can leave the shop and payment is made automatically via the stored payment method.

Thanks to Levy UK+I’s innovative Market Express service, developed especially for ExCeL, visitors can benefit from a diverse selection of retail products. The offer includes hot drinks, healthy hot meals to go, sweet and savoury baked goods, salads, sandwiches, soft drinks and fruit juices. Snacks such as fruit, cereal bars, muesli and biscuits are also available. In addition, visitors can conveniently purchase daily necessities such as medical supplies, toiletries, reading glasses and umbrellas.

An exciting innovation awaits visitors to ExCeL, as Rak Kalidas, MD of BUILT by Levy, announces. Checkout-free technology is now being introduced at the venue. Following the successful deployment of frictionless self-service kiosks in the Levy UK + Ireland stadium portfolio, we are confident that this innovation will pave the way for a completely new customer experience.

With impressive figures of around 400 events and four million visitors a year, ExCeL is one of the leading event centres that is continuously working to improve the customer experience. Simon Mills, Chief Commercial Officer at ExCeL, highlighted that the partnership with Levy UK+I now enables a better and faster experience using proven secure technologies. This leaves more time for visitors to network, learn and trade during their event.

Amazon is entering into an exciting collaboration with ExCeL, London’s largest venue, to introduce the latest innovation in retail: the checkout-free shopping experience. Jon Jenkins, Amazon’s vice president of Just Walk Out technology, expressed his excitement about the collaboration and emphasised the intention to offer ExCeL visitors a convenient and seamless shopping experience without having to queue at checkouts.

With its PAS-2060 certification, ExCeL has taken a significant step towards sustainability. As the first UK venue to meet this internationally recognised standard, ExCeL demonstrates that it is possible to deliver world-class events without harming the environment.
